Memory cards

A memory card or flash memory card is a solid-state electronic flash memory data storage device used with digital cameras, handheld and Mobile computers, telephones, music players, video game consoles, and other electronics. They offer high re-record-ability, power-free storage, small form factor, and rugged environmental specifications. There are also non-solid-state memory cards that do not use flash memory, and there are different types of flash memory.

There are many different types of memory cards and jobs they are used for. Some common places include in digital cameras, game consoles, cell phones, and industrial applications. PC card (PCMCIA) were among first commercial memory card formats to come out in the 1990s, but are now only mainly used in industrial applications and for I/O jobs (using types I/II/III), as a connection standard for devices (such as a modem).
From the late 1990s into the early 2000s a host of new formats appeared, including SD/MMC, Memory Stick, xD-Picture Card, and a number of variants and smaller cards. The desire for ultra-small cards for cell-phones, PDAs, and compact digital cameras drove a trend toward smaller cards that left the previous generation of "compact" cards looking big. In digital cameras SmartMedia and CompactFlash had been very successful, in 2001 SM alone captured 50% of the digital camera market and CF had a strangle hold on professional digital cameras.

Nowadays, most new PCs have built-in slots for a variety of memory cards; Memory Stick, CompactFlash, SD, etc. Some digital gadgets support more than one memory card to ensure compatibility.

DDR memory

DDR memory ( Double Data Rate memory), is a new high performance type of memory that runs at twice the speed of normal SDRAM. This DDR SDRAM is ideally suited to the latest high performance processors to increase overall system speed. The faster the memory, the quicker DDR Memory PC 3200, PC2700 and PC2100 , PC2100 SO-DIMM - 184 pin, 200 pin instructions can be passed to the processor. DDR memory provides roughly a 15% boost in performance compared to regular SDRAM. With DDR memory now in the affordable price range, and motherboard manufacturers phasing out SDRAM on nearly every new board, it looks like DDR is definitely here to stay

It must be remembered that if you want to upgrade the memory of a computer that uses DDR1, you cannot buy a DDR2 module and use it to supplement a DDR1 chipset. The slots for DDR1, 2 and 3 are different. Some motherboards, however, have slots for all these DDR formats. The booklet on the motherboard should tell you how to install additional RAM on your computer. Sixty-four bit processors often support more than 3.5 GB of DDR RAM. A 64-bit Windows Vista system, for example, will support memory of up to 128GB.

A DDR RAM operates at a lower voltage than an SDR RAM, resulting in lower power consumption. Though it has the same architecture as an SDR RAM, a DDR RAM has 184 pins, instead of 168. It also has a single notch at the connector, not two. The bus width of DDR memory is 64 bits per channel. Most DDR-based chipsets come with matched pairs of modules and are made for processors that are 1GHz or faster.
DDR memory is the latest in high-performance memory module technological advances. It offers twice the data bandwidth of conventional PC100 or PC133 SDRAM, and is particularly well suited for high-performance servers and workstations, which need optimal CPU-memory performance.

Memory Card Speed Explained

Memory Card Speed:

Memory card speed is the card's performance with regard to how quickly data can be transferred to or from it. compare cards by the “X” speed, such as 80X, 150X,The card speed is often stated in -Times- ratings i.e. 12X, 40X etc (just as the speed of recordable CD's and DVD's is measured), and sometimes more specifically in megabytes per second (Mb/s).X is the baseline equal to a card accepting 150KB in one second. By today's measure, sub 20X represents a standard speed, 20X to 40X is mid-high speed and over 40X is high speed. The chart below shows the relationship between the two figures.

  • 1X = 150KB per second
  • 8X = 1.2 Mb/sec
  • 10X = 1.5MB per second
  • 12X = 1.8 Mb/sec
  • 20X = 3.0 Mb/sec
  • 25X = 3.8 Mb/sec
  • 30X = 4.5 Mb/sec
  • 40X = 6.0 Mb/sec
  • 50X = 7.5MB per second
  • 60X = 9.0 Mb/sec
  • 66X = 10.0 Mb/sec
  • 80X = 12.0 Mb/sec
  • 90X = 15.0 Mb/sec
  • 133X = 20.0 Mb/sec
  • 150X = 22.5MB per second
  • 300X = 45MB per second

Faster cards can accept more megabytes of information per second. But just how much of an advantage is a faster card? With some cameras, there isn’t much advantage to using a faster card, while others will benefit from the high speed.

The Secure Digital Association (SDA) defines three speed classes in order to let users identify speed and performance capabilities of SDHC cards and the host products. The speed class rating specifies a MINIMUM sustained write speed for SDHC cards.

  • Class 2 = 2MB per second
  • Class 4 = 4MB per second
  • Class 6 = 6MB per second

Notebook memory

Notebook memory

Everything in life needs a little bit of upgrading from time to time. The computer industry sure does its own upgrading jig frequently and seems to make a fine scene out of it. The primary reason for upgrading your personal computers and notebooks is of course, the need for better performance to take care of applications that need enhanced calibration. When it comes to upgrading your computer, the most important segment that would go through the grind is the computer memory, because that is what will facilitate the running of bigger and more applications.

A system memory comes in two forms broadly – SD ram and DD ram, of which DDR memory offers faster and better performance in terms of data retrieval and dispersal, and is widely used today. Compared to the memory used in personal computers, the memory chip for notebooks come in smaller sizes to fit within the compact frame.
The denominations that usually come in the memory circuit are 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 3GB and 4GB rams, although most notebook makers have started offering their products with higher configurations, so you need not upgrade much later. At least, that takes care of the obstacle of limited upgrading facility on notebooks. There are various types of memory in the market, but you would want to buy the one that suits your requirements ideally and is best for your notebook.

SLC vs. MLC Flash Memory

SLC vs. MLC: An Analysis of Flash Memory

Single-level cell (SLC) and multi-level cell (MLC) Flash memory are similar in their design. MLC Flash devices cost less and allow for higher storage density. SLC Flash devices provide faster write performance and greater reliability, even at temperatures above the operating range of MLC Flash devices.

SLC Flash stores one bit value per cell, which basically is a voltage level. The bit value is interpreted as a “0” or a “1” and there are multiple values that an MLC cell can represent. The values can be interpreted as four distinct states: 00, 01, 10, or 11.

SLC and MLC Compared

Now that the differences between SLC and MLC have been explained, let’s compare their specifications to help further make a distinction between the two grades.

Express Card

Express Card:

ExpressCard is a hardware standard replacing PC cards (also known as PCMCIA cards), both developed by the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA). The host device supports both PCI Express and USB 2.0 connectivity through the ExpressCard slot, and each card uses whichever the designer feels most appropriate to the task. The cards are hot-pluggable. This is an open standard by ITU-T definition which can be obtained from the ExpressCard website. However, a US$2,500 fee[1] is required to access the documentation for non-PCMCIA members.

Uses
These slots can accept Firewire 800 (1394B), Serial ATA external disk drives, Solid-state drives, Wireless network interface cards, TV tuner cards, soundcards, additional memory and memory card readers, among other things.

Form factors:
ExpressCard supports two form factors, ExpressCard/34 (34 mm wide) and ExpressCard/54 (54 mm wide, in an L-shape) — the connector is the same on both (width 34 mm). Standard cards are 75 mm long (10.6 mm shorter than CardBus) and 5 mm thick, but may be thicker on sections that extend outside the standard form — for antennas, sockets, etc. The 34 mm form factor cards fit into both 34 mm and 54 mm card slots via a diagonal guide in the rear of the 54 mm slot that guides the card to the connector. The 54 mm card will fit in only a 54 mm slot.

SODIMM memory

A SO-DIMM, or small outline dual in-line memory module, is a type of computer memory integrated circuit.SO-DIMMs are mainly used in notebooks, small footprint PCs (such as those with a Mini-ITX motherboard), high-end upgradable office printers, and networking hardware like routers.

SO-DIMMs have 72, 100, 144, or 200 pins. The 100 pin package supports 32-bit data transfer, while the 144 and 200 package supports 64-bit data transfer. This compares to regular DIMMs that have 168, 184, or 240 pins, all supporting 64-bit data transfer.

100-pin SO-DIMMs have two notches, 144-pin SO-DIMMs have a single notch near (but not at) the center, and 200-pin SO-DIMMs have a single notch nearer to one side.

SO-DIMMs are more or less equal in power and voltage rating to DIMMs, and as memory technology moves forward, both SO-DIMMs and DIMMs are available in equal speed (clock speeds such as 400Mhz PC3200, for example, and CAS latency such as 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0) and capacity (512MB, 1GB, etc.). More recent DDR2 SO-DIMM memory modules have clock speeds up to 800 MHz PC6400 and modules will soon be available with speeds of 1066 MHz PC8500.

SO-DIMMS are useful to design systems which have space restrictions and fit into small Form Factor systems/PCs.

SIMM Memory

O E M P C W O R L D- The world's memory value leader

SIMM (Single In-Line Memory Module)

A SIMM (single in-line memory module) is a module containing one or several random access memory (RAM) chips on a small circuit board with PINs that connect to the computer motherboard. This is an older type of computer memory.Since the more RAM your computer has, the less frequently it will need to access your secondary storage (for example, hard disk or CD-ROM), PC owners sometimes expand RAM by installing additional SIMMs. SIMMs typically come with a 32 data bit (36 bits counting parity bits) path to the computer that requires a 72-pin connector. SIMMs usually come in memory chip multiples of four megabytes.Sometimes you can get away with installing SIMMS, but they have to be installed in pairs.

The memory chips on a SIMM are typically dynamic RAM (DRAM) chips. An improved form of RAM called Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) can also be used. Since SDRAM provides a 64 data bit path, it requires at least two SIMMs or a dual in-line memory module (DIMM).

miniSD memory cards

The miniSD Card is a small form factor removable and portable memory device intended for use in cell phones/mobile phones, digital cameras, MP3 players and many other gadgets.
In a March 13, 2003 press release, SanDisk Corporation announced the introduction of the miniSD and demonstrated it at CeBIT 2003.

The miniSD card was adopted in 2003 by the SD Association as an ultra-small form factor extension to the SD card standard. While the new cards were designed especially for use in mobile phones, they are usually packaged with a miniSD adapter which enables compatibility with all devices equipped with a standard SD Memory Card slot.

The miniSD card is made by several different manufacturers and comes in different brand names. Its compatibility is universal. The miniSD card is often confused with the microSD card which is another, smaller, SD derivation. The microSD card may be used in miniSD devices through use of an adapter, but miniSD cards cannot be used in microSD devices since they are larger than a microSD slot. The miniSD card is currently produced in capacities ranging from 16 MB to 8GB (miniSD) and 4GB to 6GB.

Features :

  • The MiniSD Card, a thumb sized flash memory card, offers the best features of SD but in smaller physical form factor.
  • New capabilities in 2.5G and 3G mobile phones including built-in digital still cameras, content downloading, and games are dramatically increasing the requirements for data storage and creating the need for removable storage.
  • The miniSD Card meets this need by providing the functionality of a standard SD Card in the ultra small form factor required by mobile phones.
  • The MiniSD SECURE DIGITAL memory card is available in capacities from 128MB to 4GB and is compatible with portable computing devices, digital cameras, cellular phones, voice recorders and MP3 players.
  • This MiniSD Secure Digital SD Card is the perfect storage device for Digital Cameras, Cell Phone,MP3 Players, PDA's, etc. It is of perfect quality.
  • MiniSD Secure Digital (SD) is the fastest growing category of flash memory cards due to its widespread use in digital cameras, digital camcorders, PDAs, handheld PCs and mobile phones, the SD cards will surpass Compact Flash and become the most popular flash memory card .
  • These MiniSD cards are manufactured to SD Card specifications and are compatible with digital devices that use Secure Digital.

OEMPCWORLD

What we do:

OEMPCWorld.com sells oem computer memory and Flash memory products at wholesale prices for PCs, Macs, Laptops, Music Samplers, printers, cameras and more. We offer a wide variety of popular and hard to find older 72p pin SIMMs, 168 pin DIMMs and 184 pin Rambus modules at unbelievably low prices as well as the latest DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 modules. From 16Mb to over 4.0GB, we have it in stock and ready to ship. Wide selection, great prices, unmatched service.

Why OEMPCWorld
Founded in 1998 OEMPCWorld.com can make claim to offering the best value on the market for configurator guaranteed memory. Its founders have been in the computer memory business since the very first IBM PC had 64K of ram back in 1984.

Some companies offer lower priced items but when you use their configurator they point you to a much more expensive option. This is called bait and switch. Offer low priced items on the shopping comparison sites but when you use the configurator it does not list these low priced items as compatible and they tell you to buy the higher priced item for guaranteed compatibility. We don't do that (assuming of course you are using our configurator). All our items are offered at one low price and the product we carry is guaranteed compatible or your money back. We do not offer multiple tiers or varying grades of products, that concept is absurd. Our products are guaranteed compatible and have a lifetime warranty; all products offer high value and the highest grade possible.

We also offer some of the highest levels of customer service and customer satisfaction numbers in the industry - customers rate our overall service at better than 9.3 out of 10 (see Bizrate)and 99.6% of our customer are either completely satisfied or very satisfied (based on 35 000 customer ratings since 1999). Our returns processing averages 4.5 days from receipt to ship, the industry average is 12 days.
Many competitors charge 15% restocking fees if the configurator is not used and if you do use the configurator then you pay for the higher priced item. They also charge a higher fee if you order over the phone or limit your free shipping options.

In addition, we offer excellent value across all our product lines, not just the new products, we still sell 32MB EDO SIMMs for the same price we sold them for 5 years ago, everyone sells new items like DDR and DDR2 for low prices and then if you need PC100 you pay twice what we charge.

High value across the entire product line.

We offer Lifetime Warranty on all memory products and ALWAYS offer an unconditional 30 day money back guarantee with no restocking fees.

Customer Service is available during the indicated hours at (408) 350-0341.

168-pin DIMM Memory

168-pin DIMM Memory

They contain 168 pins on the bottom of the circuit board. There are two notches on the bottom of the board and they must be aligned properly in order for them to be inserted. These memory modules are primarily used in newer computers and can be inserted one at a time unlike the SIMMs, which have to be inserted in pairs.

168-pin DIMMs are found in Pentium and Athlon systems. Each 168-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path, so they are installed alone in 64-bit systems. 168-pin DIMMs are available in FPM, EDO, PC66, PC100 and PC133.

The number of chips on a 168-pin DIMM may vary, but they have 84 pins on the front and 84 pins on the back for a total of 168. 168-pin DIMMs are 5.375" long and 1.375" high, and the heights may vary. They have two small notches within the row of pins along the bottom of the module.

USB flash memory pen drive

USB flash memory pen drive

USB flash memory pen drive is a data storage device integrated with a USB (universal serial bus) interface. USB flash drives are typically removable and rewritable, much shorter than a floppy disk (1 to 4 inches or 2.5 to 10 cm), and weigh less than 2 ounces (60 g). Storage capacities typically range from 64 MB to 64 GB[1] with steady improvements in size and price per gigabyte. Some allow 1 million write or erase cycles[2][3] and have 10-year data retention,[4] connected by USB 1.1 or USB 2.0. USB Memory card readers are also available, whereby rather than being built-in, the memory is a removable flash memory card housed in what is otherwise a regular USB flash drive, as described below.

USB flash drives offer potential advantages over other portable storage devices, particularly the floppy disk. They are more compact, faster, hold much more data, have a more durable design, and are more reliable for lack of moving parts. Additionally, it has become increasingly common for computers to ship without floppy disk drives. USB ports, on the other hand, appear on almost every current mainstream PC and laptop. These types of drives use the USB mass storage standard, supported natively by modern operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and other Unix-like systems. USB drives with USB 2.0 support can also be faster than an optical disc drive, while storing a larger amount of data in a much smaller space.

Rambus RDRAM memory

Rambus RDRAM memory

Direct Rambus DRAM or DRDRAM (sometimes just called Rambus DRAM or RDRAM) is a type of synchronous dynamic RAM, designed by the Rambus Corporation.

Rambus Dynamic RAM memory technology, was intended to replace SDRAM and challenge DDR SDRAM as the standard memory used in computers. The first PC motherboards with support for RDRAM debuted in 1999. They supported PC800 RDRAM, which operated at 400 MHz but presented data on both rise and fall of clock cycle resulting in effectively 800 MHz, and delivered 1600 MB/s of bandwidth over a 16-bit bus using a 184-pin RIMM form factor. This was significantly faster than the previous standard, PC133 SDRAM, which operated at 133 MHz and delivered 1066 MB/s of bandwidth over a 64-bit bus using a 168-pin DIMM form factor.

Some downsides of RDRAM technology, however, included significantly increased latency, heat output, manufacturing complexity, and cost. PC800 RDRAM operated with a latency of 45 ns, compared to only 7.5 ns for PC133 SDRAM. RDRAM memory chips also put out significantly more heat than SDRAM chips, necessitating heatsinks on all RIMM devices. RDRAM also includes a memory controller on each memory chip, significantly increasing manufacturing complexity compared to SDRAM, which used a single memory controller located on the northbridge chipset. RDRAM was also two to three times the price of PC133 SDRAM due to manufacturing costs, license fees and other market factors. DDR SDRAM, introduced in 2000, operated at an effective clockspeed of 266 MHz and delivered 2100 MB/s over a 64-bit bus using a 184-pin DIMM form factor.

With the introduction of the i840 chipset, Intel added support for dual-channel PC800 RDRAM, doubling bandwidth to 3200 MB/s by increasing the bus width to 32-bit. This was followed in 2002 by the i850E chipset, which introduced PC1066 RDRAM, increasing total dual-channel bandwidth to 4200 MB/s. Also in 2002, Intel released the E7205 Granite Bay chipset, which introduced dual-channel DDR support for a total bandwidth of 4200 MB/s, but at a much lower latency than competing RDRAM. In 2003, Intel released the i875P chipset, and along with it dual-channel DDR400. With a total bandwidth of 6400 MB/s, it marked the end of RDRAM as a technology with competitive performance.

Rambus survived the obsolescence of RDRAM and moved to support DDR and DDR2 in the area of video card technology and in particular, PCI-E. Rambus also developed and licensed its XDR RAM technology.
